![]() ![]() ![]() Although they were defeated, the Americans captured the fort anyway because they didn't have enough ships to blockade the whole city. American forces under the command of Major General John Sullivan were attacking the city in order to force its surrender before the arrival of a British fleet under the command of Vice Admiral George Cockburn. Key wrote the poem after seeing the flag flying over Fort McHenry during the night of September 13-14, 1814. The poem expresses the author's gratitude to God for his mercy on America. Since then, it has grown into the United States' national anthem, and it is played at official occasions, schools, and athletic events. ![]() After being delighted that the United States had escaped British assault, Francis Scott Key penned the "Star-Spangled Banner" as a joyful poem. ![]()
